Some Schools Can Offer A Positive Spiritual Education by John Ess
Many high school juniors and seniors are trying to decide on which college to attend after they graduate. Christian colleges are a great choice especially for young people devoted to their faith. It is a good place to meet other Christians with similar values and goals. In addition to conventional college studies in liberal arts or professional programs, these schools offer a positive spiritual education.
Many religious colleges are private institutions that offer typical college degrees, and they are fully accredited by the appropriate agency. However, there is a religious basis to the teaching, and Christian morals are stressed throughout the college years. Non-accredited bible colleges also fall under Christian schools, and here students are trained exclusively for the vocational ministry.Â
There many benefits to studying Christian colleges. For students who were brought up in a Christian environment, a non-Christian university can be intimidating and even shocking if they are exposed to activities that they would consider not normal. Surrounding yourself with other Christians means you can pursue your studies with far less stress and fewer distractions.
Students at religious schools can practice their faith daily. Classes are taught by faculty who have professed their Christian faith. Students have the opportunity to blend intellectual and spiritual development, and graduates believe they have a better understanding of life and the world. These schools are typically much smaller than customary colleges and universities in the US. Smaller size means more individualized teaching for the student.Â
Most Christian colleges are Protestant with a decidedly Christian mission statement. Some of these schools are non-denominational such as the highly regarded Wheaton College located 25 miles from Chicago. Wheaton was founded in 1860, and academic rigor is what it is known for. In fact, it is often called “The Harvard of Evangelicals.” Evangelist Billy Graham and September 11th hero Todd Beamer graduated from Wheaton.
Other schools are affiliated with specific denominations. For example, Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan is associated with the Reformed Christian Church. It was founded in 1876 and named after John Calvin, the famous Protestant Reformer of the 1500s. U.S. News & World Report named the institution a “Top Up-and-Coming School” and it was also named a top college by the well known Fiske Guide to Colleges.Â
Non-Protestant Christian colleges such as Catholic colleges often have a somewhat different educational philosophy than Protestant colleges. They usually emphasize their own particular traditions such as the philosophy of their founder. In 1863 Boston College was founded by the Jesuits, and like other Jesuit schools, the philosophy is derived from the founders. Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. was founded in 1789 making it the oldest Jesuit college in the US.
Catholic religious orders that are associated with these colleges include Jesuits, Dominicans, Augustinians and the Holy Cross. Villanova University in Pennsylvania is associated with the Augustinian Order. The University of Notre Dame in Notre Dame, Indiana is associated with the Order of the Holy Cross.Â
