Like all Slavic languages, Slovenian evolved from proto-Slavic language. The earliest surviving literary monument in the Slovenian language are the Freising manuscripts, which according to estimates developed between 972 and 1093 year (most likely, however, were written before 1000). These are the oldest preserved manuscripts in the Slavonic language group.
